Importance of Emissions Reduction
Funded projects will help reduce ozone-forming emissions and aid regional efforts to meet federal ozone standards. High ozone concentrations pose a risk to human health, the environment, wildlife, agriculture and manufactured structures in the region. Ozone nonattainment can also cost the region economically – businesses may be subject to more strict regulations.
The DFW region is located in the center of the nation, and its airports play a critical role in nation-wide goods movement. Airports in the region are dispersed throughout the ozone nonattainment area, and are often situated in close proximity to areas of particular concern for environmental justice. This map illustrates the potential zone of influence of the region's airports as they relate to the region's most disadvantaged populations. Targeting airport ground support equipment, therefore, is an effective strategy to reduce emissions in general, as well as to address emissions near disadvantaged populations in particular.
