	Great strides have been made in transportation and air quality over the past year. Among the most evident changes are expanded rail service, newly opened roads and continued bicycle and pedestrian improvements to trails connecting key parts of the region. We also hosted our first Super Bowl, an event that required cooperation from all corners of Dallas-Fort Worth and showed the NFL and the region we can accommodate hundreds of thousands of visitors while meeting transportation needs of 6.5 million residents.

The work we did to create such a memorable Super Bowl will be widely noticed and help us in our quest to host other national and international events. Although transportation was a major component of the planning and execution of Super Bowl XLV, 2010 was full of challenges to overcome and milestones to celebrate. In Progress North Texas 2011: A Picture of the State of Transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area, we will examine what we’ve accomplished over the past 12 months, what we have planned to continue the strides we’ve made and the work remaining as the region continues to see its population grow rapidly. North Texas faces numerous challenges as it seeks to improve the lives of those who have chosen to live, work and raise their families here. Progress North Texas will look at five of these – funding shortfalls, air quality, partnerships, quality of life and regionalism – and their relationship to transportation. Along the way, you will be able to read about the experiences of residents contributing to the region’s efforts to improve these issues. The Dallas-Fort Worth area also continues to benefit from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which provided more than $860 million for the region’s shovel-ready projects. Transportation and air quality projects funded by the recovery act continued and in some cases concluded, and along with them North Texas jobs were saved or created. As the region’s transportation planning body, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is constantly looking for ways to improve the multimodal transportation system. But to meet the region’s needs requires input from the public. We hope to continue our dialogue with residents throughout the area. By hearing from people with diverse viewpoints, we will be able to more effectively solve the problems faced by the entire region. There are a variety of ways to keep in touch with the NCTCOG Transportation Department and make sure your ideas are considered. In this report, we will explain how you can interact with us about the projects and programs important to you. I hope you find Progress North Texas 2011 informative and will remain involved in regional transportation. With your help, the steps we’ve taken to improve our world-class transportation system will allow us to meet the expectations of residents, visitors and employers for years to come.
