2009 Keep Texas Beautiful Governor’s Community Achievement Awards Application

Applications for the 2009 Keep Texas Beautiful Governor’s Community Achievement Awards (GCAA) are now available at www.ktb.org/assets/GCAA_application_2009.pdf. All applications must be received by KTB by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2009.

The GCAA program is one of the most prestigious annual environmental awards in Texas. Each year, nine winning communities share $1 million in landscape prizes from the Texas Department of Transportation for their outstanding overall efforts to keep their communities beautiful. The awards recognize achievement in seven areas:
• Community Leadership and Coordination
• Youth Education
• Public Awareness
• Litter Prevention and Cleanup
• Litter Law and Illegal Dumping Enforcement
• Beautification and Community Improvement
• Solid Waste Management

Texas Parks and Wildlife Recreation Grants

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has posted a new form for applications for their Small Community Grant Program. Eligible applicants to the Small Community Grant Program include cities, counties, Municipal Utility Districts, etc., with populations of 20,000 or less. The award limit is $75,000. The application deadline is January 31, 2009.

Other upcoming grant application deadlines for TPWD recreation grants are:
• Outdoor Recreation Grant Program – January 31, 2009

• Urban Outdoor Recreation Grant Program – February 28, 2009 (restricted to cities and counties with populations over 500,000)

12th Annual Texas Recycling and Sustainability Summit

Early registration is now open for the 12th Annual Texas Recycling and Sustainability Summit, “Keen on Green”. The event will be held at the Moody Gardens Hotel and Convention Center. Cost to attend is $275 for members and $375 for non-members if registering before July 15, 2009. After July 15, 2009, cost to attend is $325 for members and $425 for non-members.

Upcoming National Workshops/Conferences


National Demolition Association C&D Recycling Symposium
Fall 2009, dates TBA

The National Demolition Association (NDA) has announced plans for an inaugural International Symposium on the State of C&D (Construction & Demolition) Recycling, to be held in Chicago in the fall of 2009. The NDA will partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Federation of Demolition Contractors in the United Kingdom, the European Demolition Association, and numerous other organizations involved with recycling and construction.

The International Symposium on the State of C&D Recycling will gather federal, state, and local regulators with companies involved in the demolition and recycling process to discuss ways to develop environmentally sound and economically viable ways to recycle C&D waste. There will be sessions on current generation and recycling rates, market development, new technology, administrative barriers, and economic disincentives to successful recycling.
