Our Most Precious Liquid Asset

We had a great Vision North Texas Regional Summit recently. Thanks to the many volunteers and staff who made it possible. At the end of the morning, participants used keypad polling to respond to a variety of questions. They first considered a range of potential development scenarios, from "business as usual" to a greener region.

Then they considered which issues were most important for Vision North Texas to measure as we examine the performance of these alternative scenarios over the next several months. [more]

Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck and University of Texas at Arlington President James D. Spaniolo held a press conference in December to showcase local successes on energy and climate solutions and call on President-elect Barack Obama and the incoming Congress to empower greater local action to create green jobs and address climate and energy challenges.

Other across the country held similar events throughout the country during "Local Climate Action Week," Dec. 8 through 15, endorsing a "Blueprint" for the new president and Congress, and seeking to send a message about the need for federal support in solving climate and energy challenges. [more]

I had an opportunity to discuss quality of life at the recent Vision North Texas Regional Summit. As public officials, we often promote, justify, or defend our actions by saying that they will preserve or increase the "quality of life" of our citizens. But what exactly does that mean?

Our nation's Founding Fathers described their desire for "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Today, the key to quality of life is no doubt different for each of us but continues to hinge upon-among other things-the freedom to choose how we live and how we make a living.

Vision North Texas is the region’s forum for discussion and action so we make better choices.
